For 46 remarkable years, W. C. Young was at the forefront of the national labor movement. His unwavering commitment to workers' rights and civil liberties earned him the respect and admiration of countless individuals, not only in Paducah but across the nation. It's no wonder that Paducah honored his legacy by naming an award after him.

In 1987, W. C. Young retired from his illustrious career as the Region 10 director of the AFL-CIO's Committee on Political Education. Throughout his tenure, he championed the causes of the marginalized, dedicating himself to combat poverty and injustice through the power of honesty, understanding, and non-violent actions. W. C. Young's impact extended far beyond his professional achievements. In 1976, he embarked on a mission to uplift the people of Paducah by establishing the Paducah Community Center. This vital institution became a symbol of hope, a place where individuals could overcome the challenges of poverty and find the support they needed to secure decent housing.

In recognition of his profound contributions, the Paducah Community Center was renamed the W. C. Young Community Center in 1996. It stands as a living tribute to his enduring spirit and dedication to creating a better, more equitable world for all.

In 1953, this vision evolved into the Boys Club of Paducah, serving as a safe haven for countless young minds to learn, grow, and thrive. The impact of this institution, under Mr. Cross's nurturing guidance, was immeasurable, shaping the lives of generations. Such was the magnitude of Oscar Cross's contributions that, in 1990, the Boys and Girls Club of Paducah was renamed the Oscar Cross Boys and Girls Club, a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the betterment of our community's future. In 2004, Paducah paid homage to this remarkable individual by renaming a portion of Jackson Street as Oscar Cross Avenue.
